# Make and take calls

> Place calls from the Keypad or a conversation, answer incoming calls, and use the controls you get during a call.

Calls run in the browser or the [desktop app](https://support.vocal.solutions/apps/desktop.md), so all you need is a microphone. The first time you call, Vocal asks for microphone access; allow it, or calls can't connect.

## Place a call

Click **Keypad** in the rail. Type a number, or start typing a name in **Enter a name or number** and pick the contact, then press Enter or click the call button. Beside the dialpad, **Favorites**, **Calls**, and **Chats** list the people you talk to, your recent calls, and your recent texts, and each row can call or text that person.

If you're on more than one number, **My caller ID:** above the field shows which number the call will come from. Click it to choose another before you dial. If it says **No number yet. Get one to call out**, you haven't been given a number; see [Get a number](https://support.vocal.solutions/numbers/get-a-number.md).

You don't have to go to the Keypad. The **Call** button in a conversation's header calls from that conversation's number, so the driver sees the same number you've been texting from. Contacts have a **Call** button in their details, too.

## Answer a call

An incoming call shows a banner at the top of the app with **Accept** and **Reject**. If you're already on a call, it offers **Hold & Accept**, which parks the first caller on hold, or **End & Accept**. Which calls ring you, and in what order, depends on your number's setup; see [Ringing your team](https://support.vocal.solutions/calls/ringing-your-team.md).

## During a call

A call opens in the full call view, with the live transcript building as you talk. The controls:

| Control | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Mute** / **Hold** | Silence your mic, or put the caller on hold (**Resume** brings them back) |
| **Keypad** | Press digits for a phone menu, such as a broker's "press 2 for dispatch" |
| **Audio** | Switch microphone or speaker mid-call |
| **Transfer** | Send the call to a teammate or another phone number ([details](https://support.vocal.solutions/calls/ringing-your-team.md)) |
| **Add** | Bring a third person onto the call |
| **Notes** | Contact notes and tasks for the person you're talking to |
| **Messages** | Your text thread with them |
| **Transcript** | Bring the transcript back after opening another panel |

Click **End call** when you're done. The call then shows up in your [Inbox](https://support.vocal.solutions/inbox.md) with its transcript and summary.

### The floating call widget

Need to check a load in another part of the app? Click **Minimize call** and the call shrinks to a small card you can drag anywhere in the window. It follows you between pages and shows a running caption of the transcript. It has mute, keypad, hold, and end buttons, and **More call actions** holds **Transfer**, **Add person**, **Notes and tasks**, **Audio settings**, and **Hide live transcript**. Click **Open full call view** to go back.

Your next call opens the way you left the last one. A call you start from a page that can't show the full view, like Contacts, starts in the widget.

In the desktop app, **Pop out call** moves the call into its own phone window. See [Vocal for desktop](https://support.vocal.solutions/apps/desktop.md#the-phone-window).

## Listen to live calls

Owners, Admins, and group managers see **Live** in the sidebar. It lists your team's calls happening right now; group managers see calls on the numbers in groups they manage. Select one to listen in without the caller or your teammate hearing you, with the transcript alongside. **Mute call audio** silences it for you.

## Audio settings

Go to **Settings → Audio** to set your **Microphone**, **Speaker**, and **Ringtone output**, which is where incoming calls ring. With a headset on, you can send the ring to your laptop speakers so you still hear it. **Test audio** plays a sound through your speaker or ringtone output, and the level meter under **Microphone** shows your mic is picking you up.

**Voice isolation** cuts down background voices and noise from your mic, which helps on a busy dispatch floor. It's saved on each device separately and takes effect on your next call. In the desktop app, **Microphone test** lets you hear yourself with and without it.
