# Get a phone number

> Add local or toll-free numbers to your workspace — they're answered by your AI agent instantly.

Every Vocal number is live the moment you add it: calls are answered by your AI agent, and the number can text once [SMS registration](/numbers/sms-registration) is approved.

## Add a number

1. Open **Settings → Numbers**.
2. Click to add a number and search — by area code for a local number, or browse toll-free options.
3. Confirm. The number is provisioned instantly and starts answering with your agent.

## What numbers cost

* **Each member on a paid plan includes one phone number** — most small teams never pay separately for numbers.
* Beyond your included allowance: **local numbers are $5/month**, **toll-free are $8/month**.

## Choosing local vs. toll-free

* **Local** — a familiar area code builds trust with nearby customers and gets answered more on outbound calls. The right default for most local businesses.
* **Toll-free** — looks national and keeps one number as you expand. Common for support lines.

## Decide what answers it

Each number has a [call flow](/calls/call-flows) that controls what happens when someone calls — straight to your AI agent (the default), business-hours branching, a menu, or ringing your team first. Texting conversations for the number appear in **Messages**.

Keeping your existing business number? [Port it in](/numbers/porting) — or forward it to your Vocal number as a zero-risk first step.
